Popping the lid off pot
Recently published this story on Maine’s fledgling medical marijuana dispensaries, which are slated to open this fall.
My first piece in National Geographic Traveler
I published a short walking tour of Portland, Maine, in the September issue of National Geographic Traveler. Unfortunately, it’s not online, but if you find yourself flipping through magazines at the bookstore, check it out and let me know what you think.

Green awakening →
Here’s a recent article I wrote for Mainebiz about businesses seeking sustainability, but realizing that being green involves much more than recycling paper and turning the lights out at night.

The second half of my aquaculture piece was published this week in Mainebiz. Check it out if you’re interested in Maine’s aquaculture industry.
Have 5 minutes? Watch this video news report from Vice TV about the civil war in Liberia, complete with cannibalism and gun-toting teenagers. You won’t see this stuff on your evening news.

A morning hitch
I was having a bad morning. I needed to check out of my hotel in San Carlos and find one in Guaymas, the next town over where I’d be working for the next few days. But only two hotels had any Internet presence and they were the most expensive resorts. My cell phone was babbling at me in Spanish and wouldn’t let me make a call. And I was supposed to take the bus to meet someone for...
Mexican earthquake
I just lived through my first earthquake…and didn’t even know it. I was driving with a friend home from a beachfront bar in San Carlos, Mexico. When we arrived at his home, his parents were talking about the 4.2-magnitude quake that had just shook the house. We didn’t notice it driving down the road, but since most of the sandy road was unpaved, the ride alone felt like an...

Competitive birders
I find myself sitting with a group of serious birders on a tour of Panama…they’re drinking their beer and wine, talking about the puff birds and leaf tossers they saw today. These aren’t your average birdwatchers, they’re competitive birdwatchers. They’re talking about beating the world record for the number of bird species spotted in one day, which, if you’re...
One of the first things I noticed in Panama were the incredibly colorful buses on the road. My driver, Franklin, who does not speak much English, pointed to this bus and said “transporte publico.” Really, I thought, that garishly painted bus is public transportation? I saw others during the day, each more exotic looking than the last. Later, I found out the public bus system in Panama...
I’m in Houston, my hotel reservations are in Panama City and my luggage is in Newark. Damn!
Took this little video while flying on a prop-engine plane from Portland to Newark. Unlike the naked eye, my FlipCam picks up the propeller blades.
Started out for Panama City; now find myself stuck for the night in Houston. Oh well…these are the small nuisances of a world traveler
No yesterdays on the road...
As I scrambled this morning with last minute preparations for my trip to Panama and Mexico, I felt that nervous excitement begin to course through my body. Travel is a special adventure, one that I’m passionate about. William Least Heat-Moon sums up in this quote a part of why I love travel:
“When you’re traveling, you are what you are, right there and then. People don’t...
